Frances Arnold won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018. At the 2021 ACA Annual Meeting she gave a plenary lecture, “Innovation by Evolution: Bringing New Chemistry to Life,” describing how she used directed evolution to design enzymes that catalyze new reactions. For example, she developed a new cytochrome P450 enzyme that transfers a carbene to make cyclopropene. She modified a cytochrome c enzyme to make a C-Si bond. Read more about her life here.
