Carroll K. Johnson may be best known for his work on the Oak Ridge Thermal Ellipsoid Plot (ORTEP) Program, but he had a broad range of interests both within and outside of the field of crystallography. Carroll’s friends and family knew him as someone who lived and breathed what he was studying. He believed in changing career focus to remain challenged; if he was familiar with the newest advancements in his current field, it was time to learn something new. His diverse knowledge base made him a strong advocate for the General Interest group within the American Crystallographic Association (ACA). He served as President of the ACA in 1977, and received the 1997 Martin Buerger Award for his work on thermal ellipsoid analysis and the ORTEP program.
